Shahin Dezh is one of the cities in West Azerbaijan Province, located in the west of Iran. This city lies on the slopes of the Zagros Mountains and near the Zarrineh River. Every year, storks migrate from northern, colder regions to warmer areas, and due to its unique geographical location, Shahin Dezh is chosen as a destination by these birds. The migration of storks to Shahin Dezh is not only important for the region's natural ecosystem, but also raises awareness about the importance of conserving natural habitats for migratory birds. It can also strengthen conservation efforts. In the local culture of Shahin Dezh's people, the presence of storks in homes and farmlands is seen as a symbol of blessing and good fortune. When these birds land near a house or a farm, people often interpret it as a sign of prosperity and abundance. However, sometimes construction around their nests causes the storks to flee and leave their chicks behind. During the birds’ migration seasons, local people often welcome tourists. Some villages around the city—especially those near rivers—are introduced as ecotourism destinations for watching storks and other migratory birds.
