Nakhl-Gardani

Once a year, Shia Muslims pay tribute to their third Imam (guide) and mourn his martyrdom by dressing in black and parade through the streets. All this takes place on the first ten days of Muharram (from Arabic Lunar calendar) with its climax happening on the tenth (known as Ashura). In addition to classic ceremonies, few Shia cities have their own specific traditions including the city of Yazd where people lift and carry a gigantic wooden structure, known as "Nakhl", symbolizing Imam's coffin.
