19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Nalukataq

Nalukataq is the annual whaling festival of the Inupiat people of Utqiagvik, formally known as Barrow, Alaska. While volunteering for a shorebird research crew in Utquiavik, we were all invited to the festival one evening. We watched in awe as members of various whaling families flung each other in the air with a walrus-skinned tarp. While in the air, people would do flips, shout at the crowd, and throw candy for the children to collect. Large slabs of whale meat sat on elevated platforms as the festival proceeded, which involved children playing, and us out-of-towners freezing ourselves to death in the 10-degree windy summer weather.
