15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Nancy.

Nancy got involved in beekeeping because of her love for honey and fascination with bees. She is currently in her 18th year of working with bees and is continuing to learn new things each year. Nancy has been involved within the North Carolina beekeeping scene for nineteen years and is currently one of only six Apiary Inspectors for the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. She is the only female inspector. The aspects of beekeeping that Nancy finds most interesting is the stress honey bees endure and the ways to reduce that stress. Nancy is troubled by the thousands of honey bee colonies in North Carolina that die out each year due to ignorance and/or neglect—as some beekeepers are not educated about pests/parasites, and the required nutritional levels of honey bees.
