15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Mobile
Native

Crossing Lake Titicaca in Peru by morning was gorgeous but the light paled in comparison to the warmth I found in the Uros native people, a community that lives on floating islands crafted from reeds in the center of the lake. I was invited to take a look inside one of their huts and captured an image of family life through home accoutrements. I focused on cultural decorations, such as the miniature people in reed boats on the child's mobile in the foreground and the patterns of their dazzling weaving, hoping that these details would convey the close-knit community of the pictured curious child.
