19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Natural pools

Image made in Glod Gorges. I explored these keys a month before, and now on the second exploration I knew exactly what I want to capture and how to capture so that I can show this special area as well as possible. The colors of autumn added to this image much more colors. The reddish color of the walls is given by the high concentration of iron that is present in these rocks. The Glod Gorges make up a protected area of national interest that corresponds to the 4th category IUCN (nature reserve of geological, floristic and landscape type), located in Alba county, on the administrative territory of Almasu Mare commune. The natural area is located in the southeast of the Metalliferous Mountains (mountain group of the Apuseni Mountains, belonging to the mountain range of the Western Carpathians), in the central-western part of Alba county (at the territorial limit with Hunedoara county) and the northern part of Ardeu.
