23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
negrito

A young man poses at a former hacienda nestled among the sugarcane fields of El Espinal, during the Afro-Mestizo carnival of this town located in the mountains of the state of Veracruz. The people of this area have African roots, as the enslaved people who came to Mexico during the Spanish conquest migrated to the mountains to establish their own villages. This is why the young people of this community wear costumes with bull or animal masks using the colors of the Ghanaian flag, reflecting their heritage from that country.
