17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Nenets woman

Life in the arctic is fragile, and timing is everything. The Nenets have a system passed down for generations, of working efficiently every minute of the day during migration season in order to maintain basic comfort and survival in this environment. When things go wrong, they have a remarkable ability to adjust and respond quickly. However, climate change has created a devastating situation that is almost impossible to adapt to. The changing landscape is threatening to end the Nenets way of life as they have known it for hundreds of years.
