Nepenthes madagascariensis
Nepenthes madagascariensis is Madagascar's native pitcher plant, a carnivorous plant that digests any unwitting insect that falls into its "pitcher." I encountered many unique plants and animals during my studies with the School for International Training's Madagascar: Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management program; we first encountered Nepenthes on our way back from an afternoon in a fishing village where we learned about the intricacies of a lifestyle dependent on the ocean's resources, and how environmental changes and a new mining operation in the region were affecting that lifestyle.
