20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
New beginning

A rose bush in our garden looked very much dead, so we tore out the unsightly remains. We thought we tore out everything, roots and all. To our surprise, the next time we noticed that area of the garden, we saw this beautiful new rose bud, as you see it. To me, it is a metaphor for so much in life: you are disappointed when something ends, but sometimes a delightful, surprising new beginning rises out of the remains, and sometimes the new beginning is more rooted than you expect.
