16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
North Wall of Spahats Canyon
Growing precariously on a narrow canyon ledge, a lone pine tree grows to heights solely under the control of nature. While it may appear that the colors of the rock have been artificially painted, they are in fact in their raw unadulterated state, and made as a result of volcanic activity in the rock bed eons ago.
