15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Northern Lights at Midnight
This photo was taken in September 2017, during the fall with no snow on the ground. The lakes at Chena Lakes Recreation Area in North Pole, Alaska are not frozen over, so the aurora can be seen reflecting across the water. The light in the sky on the upper left hand side is light pollution from the city of Fairbanks.
