15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
On the Navesink River with Mother Nature

Take a turn off your usual daily path and enjoy the simplest pleasures of life. It’s a sentiment I truly believe in and wish everyone would embrace. If you stop to live in the moment, you’ll find beauty in every corner of your own world, where you least expect it. Driving through our home state of New Jersey, my husband and I were about to make a right when I said, “Make a left, maybe we can see the sun set.” We weren’t expecting anything magnificent or to even take a photograph as we didn’t even have a camera with us (only an iPhone). When we reached the promenade, however, the sky seemed to part and a huge sun appeared giving the water an icy-like glow and making the skies feel like mountains. I felt like we were on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland rather than in our home state of New Jersey, USA! We had to capture a quick photo or two.
