In India women are highly revered as Goddesses. On the other hand in the social scenario the reality is such that a professionally qualified lady commands respect, but not the laborer class or one doing a menial job. Those helping their menfolk in farming, put in a lot of hard work too. These rural women seldom get the appreciation they deserve. In fact, they are like the Goddess Annapoorna who nourishes. One such lady is Durgavathi Devi of Pith Patrahiya village, Chakia, Dist.Chandauli, working in a farmland. Her day starts at dawn, waking up to her household morning chores, attending to her aged in laws and a husband who goes to the fields, serving breakfast of leftovers and packing his lunch and seeing children off to a nearest government school. By midmorning, she also goes to work for dehusking rice, the old fashioned way, manually. Machines are not for her because they are expensive. So physical labor is the only option, even if it tires her. If she falls ill, she can’t always afford either medicine or rest. She has mouths to feed, not just of her family but many more out there, away from the fields. And so goes on an unending tale of an Indian women farmhand.
