20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel

The photo shows the results of the January events in Kazakhstan, Almaty. On January 5, 2022, rallies began all over Kazakhstan because of corruption, living standards, poverty and unemployment in the oil-rich. There were reports of deadly clashes with police and military, a nationwide internet blackout and buildings damaged in three major cities. These are photo of building that were damaged on the Republic Square during the rallies.
