One Small Step
Workers walk across one of the gates in the Panama Canal's Miraflores Locks as a container ship enters and waits its turn to proceed. Gravity is used to fill or empty the lock, raising or lowering a vessel 54 feet to allow it to transit through the canal. Rail locomotives on each side of the lock use cables attached to the vessels to pull them forward.
