17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Onward And Upward

Every nature-lover knows that overcast, blustery days can produce some of the most exciting scenes to study and photograph. Ironically, having my "head in the clouds" during one quiet Saturday afternoon walk through a nearby botanical garden was exactly what enabled me to pay closer attention to what was happening all around me. As my gaze followed a lone autumn leaf surfing the wind, I felt left behind, all the while imagining where its journey upward had begun and where it might end. I looked away to smile at my young son walking beside me, never to see that leaf again.
