Orchid mantid, a master of camouflage
Hymenopus coronatus is a mantis from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. It is known by various common names, including walking flower mantis, orchid-blossom mantis and orchid mantis. I have a friend who grows orchids on his property in Malaysia. He indicated that sometimes he sees orchid mantids on the blossoms. I went to the property and found several mantids on such flowers. They were hard to spot since the camouflage was almost perfect. I photographed one making sure I had a dark background to illustrate the visual mimicry.
