Orest and Pilad

Rocks Orest and Pilad are two rocks located in the Black Sea near Cape Fiolent. A sacred place for many believers, because it is believed that it was here that the Apostle Andrew the First-Called set foot on land. In the larger rock there is a through grotto, about 15 meters long, through which you can swim. The entrance is at a depth of 13 meters. The rocks got their name in connection with a legend, as a reminder of a strong male friendship, which is not afraid of any trials, for the sake of which it is not a pity to lay one's life for a friend ... This friendship began with a terrible event. As a child, Orestes witnessed a murder: a mother and her lover were hacked to death with an ax of King Agamemnon, the boy's father. Relatives miraculously saved the child, and then hid from the cruel mother in the house of his own aunt. There he grew up with his cousin, Pilad, who became his close friend. Having reached adulthood, Orestes received the order of the gods from Apollo: avenge his father, kill the traitorous mother. Pilad helped his friend to fulfill this heavy duty, who did not leave him either in sorrow or in joy. The sin of matricide was a heavy burden on Orestes. To be justified, he asked for judgment on himself in Athens, and received a test: to bring to the city a shrine - a wooden statue of Artemis - from her temple in distant Taurida. In a mortally dangerous journey, the friends set off together: the Taurus were famous for their cruelty, they sacrificed random travelers great Virgo - Artemis. Orestes and Pilad managed to get into her temple - but tied up. Prepared for slaughter, they were handed over to the priestess of Iphigenia. The girl recognized one of the captives as her brother, Orestes. Once their father, Agamemnon, accidentally killed the doe of Artemis while hunting. To soften the anger of the goddess, he sacrificed his daughter to her. The ruthless hunter took pity on the beautiful girl and transferred her to Taurida, making her her servant. Iphigenia helped the young men avoid a terrible fate; the three of them left the peninsula, taking a wooden idol. Since then, the names of the brothers have become a symbol of true friendship.
