22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Original Eiffel Tower staircase in the desert town of Felicity, CA

The founder of the desert town of Felicity, CA, originally came from France and eventually became a naturalized citizen of the US. The Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, was renovating the staircase due to its age and instability, so it cut the original staircase into 20 equal-sized sections. When the founder heard of this, he bought one of the sections and brought it all the way to his new home as a way of paying tribute to his original home and heritage.
