On the Aegean-sea side of Turkey just outside of the town of Kusadasi, there is an outpost built by the famous Ottoman pirate-turned-captain Barbarossa. Inside this fortress there is a whale skeleton of a beached whale that was put together. I found this to be incredibly fantastical and I thought about all the different seafaring people - greeks, romans, ottomans, that had come across so many sea creatures.
