17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Out of the shadows

A young girl living with albinism hides from the midday sun in the shade of her house, in a village on the outskirts of Lilongwe, Malawi. In Malawi, people with albinism are being killed and their bodies harvested as most people believe there is an market for these body parts, people who are prepared to pay large sums of money for them and witch doctors who use them in potions to cure everything from disease to bad luck. More than 163 people have been attacked in the past two years, at least 22, fatally.
