21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Overgrown Courthouse Steps

The small town of Cooperstown, North Dakota is home to the Historical Griggs County Courthouse. The courthouse is one of the oldest public buildings in North Dakota having been erected in 1885. I'm originally from Hawai'i and seeing my state's area code (808) nearly 4,000 miles away reminded me of home.
