14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Sustainable Travel
Paddling down the Amazon in a dugout canoe. (This is actually a small side river off the Amazon)

Sustainable travel, to me, is incorporating native food, travel methods, activities, and ideas in as many aspects of a trip as possible. On each day of our vacation with my parents, my husband and I tried to find as many local, native activities to fill our time. This day, as we were sightseeing (birds) along the river, I noticed the lovely dugout canoe. Our local guide asked the owners if we could use it. They were very friendly and said we could. My husband and father both attempted to paddle it up and down that particular part of the river. It was hard work. Dugout canoes are very tippy! And we learned an interesting insight into their lives and how they live. And were told how dugout canoes were made.
