14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Painted desert in Pahreah Canyon, Utah

In the 1800's this desert area was settled by Mormon settler's. Coal was found here, close to the beautiful painted desert. It became a ghost town in the 1920's due to flash floods, which also eventually washed away the deserted buildings.
