22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
Painting with Water #1

Spring in the Western Cape is famous for its blooms. In the mountains where temperatures are very high there is world of succulents that thrive in the climate. The Queen of the Night is a rare type of flower that blooms only one night a year. The flower queen at night in full bloom is a rare sight as it wilts before dawn. I captured this shot before sunrise and was fortunate enough to be able to pick a barrel cactus bloom on the same day.
