21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Pan

This photo of a cattle egret was taken at the Parc de la tête d'or, in Lyon. I go there often just to console myself for the big city, where wild nature is lacking. In this park, resident birds all year round. The presence of the Rhône nearby and a lake attracts many wild species. I like this photo which moves away from "supernaturalist" fashion, it reconnects with a pictorial approach, I want it linked to the romantic movement of the 19th century, which praised nature in a way that we have forgotten today: not by science which demonstrates the rational importance of biodiversity, but by simply wonderment. I name it Pan, because it reminds me of the poem by Victor Hugo, where these lines are written: "Search in nature, spread out before your eyes, Whether winter saddens him or summer cheers him up, The mysterious word that every voice stutters. Hear what the lightning in the heavens says! It is God who fills everything. The world is his temple; Living work, where everyone listens and contemplates it. Everything speaks to him and sings to him. He is alone, he is one.
