15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Panic
I observed this scene for the first time two years ago, while taking delight in the Ground Squirrels’ behaviour. I immediately put it onto my list of photo tasks as I was sure I had witnessed the most interesting thing in this species’ world. Fortunately, it is not a unique scene because Ground Squirrels enjoy tasting dandelion stalks and seeds which can be found in abundance even in trimmed lawn. This image is the result of a two-week lying in the grass.
