Paper nautilus riding on a salp
This little tiny larval paper nautilus is resting in a living salp, hitching a ride because it is tired and to conserve its energy for quick escapes from predators. Perhaps a couple of days old, this little squirt is about the size of a pea. The thin calcite shell is our clue that this is a female, and the hazy look is because the nautilus is inside the salp- taking a ride in a room with a view. Only the females get the shell, as that is where they will incubate their egg clutch when that time comes. It kind of looks like a white soft diaper gently swaddling the baby.
