19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Part of the Herd
This shot was taken in Amboseli National Park in Kenya in August of 2021. Ambolseli is famously known for its abundance of elephants so that was our primary photography target. Luckily, we found a nice size family of about 25 elephants at sunset. The family was out in the field just kicking up dirt, in search for grass so it was a good learning experience for this one-month-old elephant calf. It was such a great sight to see how this baby interacted and depended on his mother. He must learn all these new tricks and tips in order to survive on his own because when he gets bigger, he will be forced out of the herd eventually to go out and start his own family.
