18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Participation Trophy: Robert E. Lee

Richmond Virginia’s Monument Avenue has had a rich history of promoting and exemplifying The “Heroes” of the traitorous Confederacy by way of statue. This photo was taken along Richmond’s Monument Avenue. With the recent spark in the B.L.M (Black Lives Matter) movement these once horrible monuments to the losing side of history have now become meeting points and canvases for expression to all of those who truly want to make our country a better place for those who have been systematically oppressed by it.
