21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
Past and Future

The photo shows trees growing along the shoreline of the Pacific Ocean. Because the shoreline recedes, the trees are holding on to the ground with all of their might. Visitors are kept back from the shoreline by way of a split-rail fence in a effort to restore and prevent the further erosion of the shoreline. The fence is made from the same wood as the trees that live and struggle to survive in the harsh conditions of the beach just above the tidal zone. The fence was essentially built from trees that have now returned to their home.
