22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Patience
An Alaskan brown bear patiently waits atop Brooks Falls in Katmai for a the salmon mustering at the bottom to make the leap up the waterfall. Each year millions of sockeye salmon make their way back to Bristol Bay from the open ocean to their spawning creeks inland. Along the way they have to avoid many obstacles including the hungry bears on the Brooks River. This natural spectacle has recently come under threat by a proposed mine in the area that could disrupt this ecosystem if allowed to go ahead.
