23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
Patience Pays Off

I took this photograph on the very first day of my trip, still settling into the rhythm of the landscape and the constant thunder of the falls. For hours, I watched salmon hurl themselves upstream while a lone bear stood poised at the edge, unmoving. There was something almost reverent about the stillness — as though the bear understood that the river would eventually deliver exactly what it needed. When the salmon finally launched into its reach, everything aligned: light, motion, instinct, and luck. In that fraction of a second, I witnessed the raw efficiency of wildlife and the quiet beauty of persistence. Moments like this remind me why these ecosystems matter — why conservation, habitat protection, and responsible stewardship are essential. Nature rewards patience for both the bear and the photographer!
