Pedernal from Chimney Rock
Before the start of the school year last year, we took a short trip about three hours north of our city, to Ghost Ranch, where I spent much time as a child, exploring the rocky cliffs and trails around the facilities. I was so proud of my son, 6 at the time, for completing the 7 mile hike up to Chimney Rock and back. When we made it to the Chimney, the vista spread out in front of us was awe-inspiring. There had been a light rain, so it cleared the air and brought out the subtle desert colors in the landscape. The reds and yellows of the painted earth, with the greens and blues surrounding the Abiquiu reservoir, and the blues and cyans of the surrounding mountains and the sky. It was incredible.
