19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Peekaboo!
From his perch on a fence in South Chicago, this jumping spider cautiously peers up at me, curious, if a little shy. I like to walk around the neighborhood and find insects who've built their homes around human infrastructure. Jumping spiders in particular love to spin webs along metal fences. For me, it's a reminder that there is no sharp dividing line between the human and natural worlds. Even the structures we build to keep everything out are somebody's home.
