14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Peering through the branches of a coastal live oak into Big Basin Redwoods State Park on a foggy morning.

I took my Ecology class to Rancho del Oso, where Waddell Creek empties into the Pacific Ocean. It was the first field trip of the semester, and the students' assignment was to practice observing patterns in nature as we hiked through the forest. This coastal live oak is my favorite tree, as it represents the connection between the redwood forest of Big Basin and the Pacific Ocean behind us.
