16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
People travelling between barangays in Balut Island.

In Balut Island Philippines, the best way to travel between barangays is to use a motor boat. Most of them can only hold up to thirteen individuals and the seas can be rough. This limits the access of the people living here to basic services. This group had to travel around the island to get to a municipality (Mabias) which has mobile network access. This is the every day life of the Filipinos living in Balut - travel by boat or walk long hours.
