Pink Aurora Borealis Night In Joshua Tree National Park ~ Two

I traveled to Iceland twice, driven by my desire to witness the enchanting aurora borealis. However, each trip ended in disappointment, as the northern lights eluded me completely. By the end of my last journey, I had resigned myself to the thought that perhaps this magical experience simply wasn't meant for me. It felt as if I were destined to miss out on a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity. Then, one night, a friend sent me a TikTok video announcing that the lights would be visible all over North America on Friday, October 11th, 2024. It was that very date, and the sun had just set. Although I was exhausted and knew I needed to wake up early the next day, I decided to venture into Joshua Tree National Park to soak in the stunning landscapes. A friend sent me a TikTok video announcing that the lights would be visible all over North America on Friday, October 11th, 2024. It was that very date, and the sun had just set. Although I was exhausted and knew I needed to wake up early the next day, I decided to venture into Joshua Tree National Park to soak in the stunning landscapes. I grabbed my tripod, a 25mm lens, and my R5 camera before driving into the park. I had a spot in mind where I hoped to find some nice Joshua Trees without straying too far from my car. Sitting in the cold dirt, I just hoped no slithering critters would find their way to me. I waited for an hour and a half, firing off long exposures, trusting that, in the darkness, something would emerge. I could see a pink hue in the dark sky with my eyes, and when I returned home and reviewed the photos, there they were—the beautiful lights I had hoped to capture. As I stepped outside, I felt hopeful. The night sky was clear, and I could see the stars twinkling like diamonds despite the half-moon. Even though I was cold, sitting in the dirt, and swore some long-horned sheep were laughing at me in the dark, I realized that sometimes the extraordinary can be found in the most unexpected places—often right in your own backyard. Just like Dorothy said, "There’s no place like home." My long-awaited encounter with the aurora borealis was finally a reality, reminding me that patience and perseverance can lead to magical moments.
