23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
Pipefish and Gull

After spending a morning photographing gulls at the beach, I was packing up when I saw one heading straight for me. I started taking photos, struggling to keep it in the viewfinder as the wind blew it inland. Then I noticed that the gull had something it its mouth. At first, I thought it was a piece of seaweed...then grass...then I realized it had caught a pipefish. You can see the eye of the pipefish. It is hard to not imagine the terror it felt, out of water and flying through the air. It's unusual experiences like this that keep me photographing wildlife. You never know what you will see!
