22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Plankton

This jellyfish was seen for the first time in 2021. It differs from other organisms of its species for its striking coloration. It was given the scientific name of Eutiara decorato. The jellyfish was photographed at night during a Black water dive, where they attract organisms that live in the depths, on seabeds accessible to underwater photographers, thanks to powerful lights that are immersed up to 30 meters. This technique allows them to concentrate large quantities of plankton and organisms that feed on them.
