20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Playmates
Dolphins play in the crystal waters of Baja California. We had left on an excursion to snorkely with giant Manta Rays, and en route we came across a huge pod of dolphins. We stopped the boat and jumped in with our snorkels and cameras to watch these beautiful animals play. At first they were wary, but quickly they became super curious and playful. Swimming towards us, then diving down and coming back up to the surface in huge arcs, sometimes jumping into the air and landing with huge splashes. It was the light that I found particularly beautiful as I watched them play, so I was very pleased with this shot as it combined the subjects with the natural patterns nicely.
