14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Sustainable Travel
Portage
It was another day in the Boundary Waters, canoeing down a rive before stopping at a portage that led to a lake. As an explorer, you are trained to learn the Leave No Trace ethics. This decreases the risk of harming the environment while on an adventure which is a symbol of sustainable travel, exploring new places with little impact to the land. Canoeing the Boundary Waters is also an American Experience. It's not only about big cities and festivals. It's also about explore America's landscape and wildernesses and helping to protect those places.
