14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Portrait of Ecuadorian Boy at School

While travelling in Ecuador, I had the chance to meet many people who inspired me immensely. While working at a volunteer project, I had the opportunity to be a part of a "Minga". This term refers to a time when people from all ends of a community come together to create a better community as a whole. In the Minga I worked in, people walked miles to come help build a school, this boy being one of them. While he is only four years old, he knew that by coming to this building site and helping out however he can he was contributing to a better future for himself and his fellow community members. I photographed him to remind me of this custom because it inspired me to always remember to help others in any way I am able to.
