"Portraits in the Bedroom" documents Tajik children affected by border policies through seven-year-old Guli and her sisters in Tashkurgan. the establishment of border outposts regulates the population, elevates military readiness, adults have to serve in remote areas.Guli and her younger sister Bijani were in the bedroom. At the door hung a cross-stitch of Mao Zedong, a common decoration in Tashkurgan households. Typically, these families would hang cross-stitches featuring both Mao Zedong and Xi Jinping facing each other.
