16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Power Slap
A 30 tonne humpback whale flexed its pectoral fin and slapped the water just inches away from my camera. The effects of the explosive movement generated a huge ‘boom’ in the water, which I could feel reverberating in my chest.
