17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
PREDATOR OR PREY

An abstract image that suggests part human part creature. As an aging artist breaking into a new art sector, I feel I am both old and young at the same time, I embody this polarity constantly. I have reimagined my identity after a 30 yr career as a dance artist to embrace new visual languages through mediums of drawing, painting, photography, film and photomedia. Within my new practice I am exploring the idea of hybridity – transformation, duality, polarity – creating images of convoluted totemic creatures. I endeavor to create psychological spaces that unsettle, embody movement and unravel questions I have about the world. I am also constantly exploring where it is my dancer self and my visual arts practice can collide. In this instance I used a self portrait and an abstract ink drawing I made, bringing the two together to create a new meaning.
