Proud Mama

A proud mama coastal brown bear (Ursus arctos) guides her two young cubs through the essential lessons of salmon hunting along the rich waterways of Chichagof Island in Southeast Alaska. Coastal brown bears rely heavily on seasonally abundant salmon runs, which provide the high-calorie nutrition needed for growth, winter fat reserves, and overall survival. Under their mother’s watchful eye, the youngsters practice these hunting skills while also gaining confidence in the dynamic, salmon-fed ecosystems that sustain brown bear populations throughout the Tongass National Forest.
