21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Puffin Magic

I got up at 4 AM to be there for sunrise. When I arrived we were disappointed to see only a handful of birds sitting and flying around an island several hundred meters away. We had hoped for hundreds or even thousands of them. As the sun rose above the horizon the sky lit up in an amazing orange glow created partly due to wildfire smoke from Quebec. As I watched the enormous orange ball rise from the ocean I noticed that it might be possible to place the sun between myself and far of puffins. A ran along the rocky cliffs, barely able to see in the dark, to a location where the sun was directly behind the island and the puffins. I set up my camera, knowing I only had a few minutes to get the shot. As I watched a few birds were flying in and landing in the right area. I moved around and found an angle that worked and was able to get some magical images in the amazing light.
