20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Purple house
Two little clowfishes appeared with surprised look among their purple anemone home. The colorful clown anemonefish, also called a clownfish, is bright orange with three white stripes—and probably reminds us of the star of the popular movie Finding Nemo. In their natural habitat, clownfish and anemones have a symbiotic relationship; both need the other to survive. Clownfish rely on anemones for protection from predators, while anemones rely on clownfish for food and cleaning away parasites that bug the anemone.
